What are some top notch salt water reels and rods?
I salt water fish a lot in the summer. I’m looking to buy my own rod and reel so i can stop mooching off my dad. This fish i catch range from anywhere in the 1 – 15 lbs range. I’m thinking of buying a 7′ 6″ Ugly Stick, and then some kind of penn reel. I want some second opinions please, if you have any suggestions i would like to hear it. I’m always open to different products, and this won’t be the last reel i buy. So i like to hear about different gear people live by. Thanks
How much money are you looking to spend? That is very important to make a good recommendation. I would personally be careful about Penn, as they make some stuff that is really good but over the past few years some of their models have dropped off in quality. Ugly Sticks are certainly durable and affordable, but you also may lose some sensitivity (of course, some people may not even notice the difference). I am a die hard fan of Shimano myself. Their Teramar line of rods is pretty hard to beat for inshore purposes, and any of their reels from mid-price on up are going to be quality. If I was going to be getting an Ugly Stick, I am pretty sure they make a “Lite Inshore” or something along those lines for a decent price that might be worth a look. Also, Daiwa BG-series reels are excellent for the money. The BG’s don’t have a lot of bells and whistles, but are definitely workhorses. But again, setting a price range for us would help quite a bit.
