Sometimes in business, weird things happen and there’s a surge in demand for certain products. Quite often you can’t explain why without a little digging. Just recently, there’s been a very high demand for fishing tackle feathers. It seems that, as with most things in life, celebrities and reality TV are to blame.

In this case it’s all down to reality television and ‘featherheads’ – a fashion craze involving wearing feather extensions in your hair. This craze seems to hark back to the 70’s fashion trend and is proving extremely popular. Some fishing tackle suppliers are refusing to sell to hairdressers and salons in an effort to prevent waning stocks – firmly keeping fishermen and anglers as the priority customer. But others are happily selling hundreds of pounds (or dollars) worth of fly fishing accessories to so called ‘feather ladies’ who make rather unusual customers in their stores.

Taking a look at eBay, the grizzly and solid coloured ‘feather extensions’ seem to be the most popular and most common. Yet you can imagine if the ladies wearing them knew their original and true purpose they might be less inclined to pop them in their hair. It’s clear from the prices involved that a big mark-up is being made on the original product. This phenomenon has been big news in the states being picked up by ABC and NBC news and other major media outlets. The majority of these birds don’t survive the plucking process and are thus euthanized beforehand. The most popular feathers used in ladies hair come from the bird’s posterior as they are generally the longest.
