Can I put a bait-casting reel on a heavy duty spinning rod?
I bought two tackle boxes full of tackle at a garage sale in the Finger Lakes area of NY…
To the point. in the tackle box are two baitcasting reels. (the more heavy duty kind you use for casting like 1 oz plus lures) i have just gotten into lake trout fishing and i want to use these reels and i just filled them up with line. Only problem is that I only have a bass fishing bait cast rod. I do have a heavy duty spinning rod. Can I put the heavy duty BC reel onto the heavy duty spinning rod? Casting distance doesn’t matter in this situation because im going to mainly be dropping and jigging vertically. I need answers,
The correct answer is NO
The correct reason has to do with what some of the posters have already mentioned, and that is typically, with a spinning rod there isn’t as many guides and they are the wrong size.
I will go further and explain how and why that affects the rod.
first the SIZE of the guides on a spinner are large because of the way the line comes off a spinning reel
Less guides are needed because the guides are pointing DOWN. you could get away with one guide and a tip if you had to.
The reason for many more guides on a conventional reel is that they are needed to prevent the line from rubbing on the rod while under load, because this type of rod is fished with the guides facing UP
So…if you fish a baitcaster with a spinning rod, you are for all practical purposes, fishing with your rod up-side down
People will point and laugh, which is not what I want them to do, I want them to say “hey, that guy is set up right and is catching fish, he must have been reading yahoo answers and was given correct information”
Seriously, even if you have a passing interest in fishing, don’t do it, if for nothing else, because I have seen people loose nice fish for this exact reason, and I’m sure you don’t want to do that
